Publications and Acknowledgements
Preparation
If you are preparing a new paper, please follow the official MWA Publication Policy and include the required Acknowledgements and any required Authors (see below).
For MWA Collaboration papers, please use the following proposal template when you prepare a new paper proposal: MWA Publication Proposal Template (Word doc). Please download a copy of doc file and edit as you need.
Required Acknowledgements
Where practical and appropriate, all MWA Publications must include a citation to the the standard MWA reference:
- Tingay et al., “The Murchison Widefield Array: The Square Kilometre Array Precursor at Low Radio Frequencies”, Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia, Volume 30, id.e007 21 pp. (2013); doi:10.1017/pasa.2012.007
MWA Publications making use of Phase II data must also include a citation to the standard MWA Phase II reference:
- Wayth et al., “The Phase II Murchison Widefield Array: Design overview”, Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia, Volume 35, id.e033 9 pp. (2018); doi:10.1017/pasa.2018.37
The following statement of acknowledgement has been constructed in accordance with the MWA membership policy, and should be used in all MWA papers:
This scientific work uses data obtained from Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara / the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory. We acknowledge the Wajarri Yamaji People as the Traditional Owners and native title holders of the Observatory site. Establishment of CSIRO's Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory is an initiative of the Australian Government, with support from the Government of Western Australia and the Science and Industry Endowment Fund. Support for the operation of the MWA is provided by the Australian Government (NCRIS), under a contract to Curtin University administered by Astronomy Australia Limited. This work was supported by resources provided by the Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre with funding from the Australian Government and the Government of Western Australia.
Required Authors (Builder's Lists)
The MWA has recognised the contributions of many team members at different points in the project's history through Builder's Lists. These are required author lists for academic journal articles, and their use is largely dependent on when a publication is proposed.
Currently, no new MWA Publications require inclusion of a builder's list, with the exception of individual science theme group policies, or Phase II flagship papers identified by the Project Scientists and then approved by the Board.
Refer to the MWA Builders Policy and the tables below for more information.

When to use Builder's Lists

1 January 2019 - 31 December 2021 | Phase II | Authors from this author list can opt-in to be a publication co-author. Paul Hancock has come up with some nifty tricks to simplify builders list opt-ins, his instructions are here. |
1 October 2016 - 31 December 2018 | Phase II | Use this author list. |
19 June 2015 - 30 September 2016 | Phase I | No required authors except for as determined by individual science theme group policies. |

Help for making Author Lists
The following files and python script from LIGO member Leo Stein can be used to generate author lists with the appropriately numbered affiliations for people. You may still have to adjust to add emails, but this will do the majority in the right format for IOP journals such as ApJ.
Example usage to spit the LaTeX out to the command line:
python make-iop-author-list.py MWA_authors.txt MWA_affils.txt
Right now the authors are just in alphabetical order, but of course they can be re-ordered or changed as needed. If you find any authors/affiliations missing or in error, please let the Principal Scientist know. Note that this is just a list of authors seen in MWA papers; it is not meant to imply any builders list etc. See make-iop-author-list.py for instructions on changing those files.
